Bike to Bayfield ‘08 – Day One
By Thom | January 21, 2009
After all of this summer’s trips, I only had one stamp left to finish up the Iron Butt National Parks Tour. One of the closest Natioinal Parks to me was the Apostle Islands near Bayfield, Wisconsin. Katie and I decided that we could make a weekend trip out of the excursion, first stopping in Duluth to see my roommates and then continuing onto the top of Wisconsin.
We originally thought of tenting on one of the islands, but we quickly realized how much gear we would have to bring, so we opted for a hotel instead. Katie and I packed the night before – I was very adamant about what she could and could not bring along. The Silverwing has some room, but not A LOT of room for gear.
We planned on taking I35 from Waseca, up to Sandstone, MN where we would take the scenic County Road 23 north to Duluth. We left early enough to avoid rush hour traffic through the Twin Cities and sailed right through.
I let Katie do most of the navigating and she directed when we stopped to take breaks and eat. I had ridden my bike all summer long, so I could have went without all of the breaks that we took, but Katie wasn’t quite Iron Butt material yet (maybe next year).
We had an excellent lunch with my roommate Kevin. We put our sights on the Apostles and continued on into Superior and followed Wisconsin County Road 13 as it wound along Lake Superior’s shores. We stopped several times for gas and refreshments – including some great ice cream and astounding pizza.
We hit Bayfield in the early afternoon and I finally got my last National Parks stamp! It was fun, but now I don’t have an excuse to travel to exotic locations (I’ll have to keep working on that one). We toured Bayfield well into the evening and then made a route to our hotel.
Less words, more pictures:

Katie is just sooo excited to go

Stuffed pizza somewhere in in northern Wisconsin,
Katie had to wheel me out.. it was great!

Katie’s getting tired of riding (5+ hours so far)
