Eastward Distraction Part 2 – Day One

    By Thom | June 12, 2008

Day One – Mason City, IA to Neosho MO – Over 500 miles

The bike is fixed (I think and hope) so it’s time to continue on with the journey! Key West or bust!!

I spent several days before I departed at Katie’s place in Mason City where they were flooded and hadn’t had any running water for 4 days. I brought her down a 5 gallon jug to put some water in so that we could flush her toilet and a nalgene  full to drink from. It was kind of a shock to turn on the faucet and have nothing come out. She wasn’t happy about the situation at all, but I think I helped being there for moral support. :)

I watched the rain showers closely as they form, died, and reformed on the radar planning on when I was going to make my “escape” out of Iowa. I decided that today was a good day to go, and if it timed it just right, I would ride through only just a little bit of rain. For most of the day, I ended up not having to worry about getting rained on as most had already past over the free way. I did get to enjoy a classic car “parade” on the northbound side as 75 classic cars drove by. I assume that there is a meet and greet someplace in Northern Iowa this weekend.

I stopped at the Harry S. Truman NHP for some stamps but missed the Fort Scott NHP by about 20 minutes. I really enjoyed the town of Fort Scott , Kansas – they had a really neat town square and surrounding country side. I may have to go back someday. After missing that stamp I felt that in such good weather I should kill some more miles. I didn’t have an AAA Campbook (invaluable–get copies if you don’t already) for this part of the world, so I was on my own. Luckily I found a decent spot pretty close to the road with nice showers.

Day one with over 500 miles – done!!
