Eastward Distraction – Day Nine
By Thom | May 29, 2008
Columbia City, IN to Mason City, IA
The final day! We woke up to cold, but great weather and were packed up and on the road very quickly. We made only stops for gas as we skirted Chicago’s toll road on our way back to Interstate 80. I had watched a show on the History Channel on the “World’s Largest Truck Stop” somewhere in Eastern Iowa, so we set our sites to hit that and the Hoover National Historic Site that wasn’t far from the truck stop.
The truck stop was busy (imagine that) they apparently have over 800 spots for trucks to lay over and a “big rig super center” where you can buy anything and everything for your own big rig. They even have a dentist and barber on site! I didn’t find anything that I need for my ride, but it was fun to look.

Full-sized truck inside
A beautiful (if you’re into yellow) Silverwing that we found parked outside of Don’s Honda in Iowa City
I made it to Katie’s apartment in Mason City before she was done with work and got to know the inside of Walgreens pretty well.
The next several days will be spent pouring over the bike fixing the leak and attempting to find out exactly what the water/electrical problem is. I’ll post some updates and final trip calculations later on…
Then stay tuned for Eastward Distraction – Part Two!!
