Eastward Distraction – Day One
By Thom | May 20, 2008
Waseca, MN to Peru, IL ~366 miles
“When I was very young and the urge to be someplace else was on me, I was assured by mature people that maturity would cure this itch. When years described me as mature, the remedy prescribed was middle age. In middle age I was assured that greater age would calm my fever and now that I am fifty-eight perhaps senility will do the job. ”
Nothing has worked.
Travels with Charley- John Steinbeck
Well, the day finally cam where my father and I could shove off from home and travel to Maine. It had been quite an adventure trying to get both bikes ready to leave today since I had gotten back from school only a couple of days ago. For my bike we were going to install stainless steel brake lines, a cb radio, and a new master cylinder. Needless to say, it was tough installing those brake lines and master – bleed, tighten, refill, bleed more, realize it’s leaking, soak up the mess, bleed again and so on. They do finally work! Very, very well indeed.
We had worked on my father’s Goldwing and realized that his voltage regulator is overcharging the battery and there was no way that he would be able to get a new one by the time we were to leave. So, crushing his dreams, we decided to take my Subaru and my bike instead. He’s bummed, but I think he enjoys being able to eat and talk on the phone while yelling at me over the CB (Thanks again Howard for letting us borrow yours).
We got a late start out of Waseca and took our time coming down to Peru. Nothing much to see along the way except for farmland and straight roads until we made it down to the Mississippi River and followed a scenic route until we hit Peru.
Nothing much for pictures, but here are a couple:
The entourage
The boyhood home of President Ronald Reagan
Our campsite
The Mississippi River
