Westward Distraction: Aftermath
By Thom | January 17, 2008
As I pulled into Waseca on the last day of my trip, I thought I heard a severe grinding noise coming from my final drive. I wrote it off as just being too tired and all of the day’s road noise and such. The next day we were to travel to Katie’s apartment in Iowa City as she was going to start school. I rode the bike and she drove with her car full. As soon as we got on the freeway, I could hear the same noise, and found that it was worse when I was deaccelerating in any gear. We decided to drive the 300 miles as something was already screwed up and it wouldn’t (I hoped) get any worse. I parked the bike and let it cool down as we unloaded Katie’s things. I then opened the inspection hole for the final drive and notice that I was missing a part of some teeth in the final drive gear. I was pretty amazed that it made that much noise for how little the were worn, but thought that there were misaligned in the 90 degree interchange. I “ordered” a used final drive from my friend Dave W. in Wisconsin and had it shipped to Waseca to install on my way back up to Duluth.
I tore the whole thing apart and this is what I found:
Yep, most of the teeth chewed up on the 90 degree gear transfer, no wonder it sounded like a machine gun. The most amazing part of the whole thing… I rode like that for at least 700 miles!! That’s why I drive a Honda…
