Westward Distraction: Day Eleven

I started early as my mom called around 6 am (8 am her time) asking how I was doing. I decided I needed to change my oil, so I stopped at Elko Honda right as they opened (amazing they had a filter for me) in Elko, UT and found a small shop that let me use their oil pan and dispose of the oil and filter. I also changed the spark plugs to a cooler temperature to help keep the engine cool as I rode in the desert. It did put my mind at ease knowing that I had fresh oil as the temperatures rose. I crossed the Salt Flats around 2:30 and was able to see some racers going pretty fast, but I could never find a good spot for a picture and there is no place to pull over. Interestingly people write things in the the salt with rocks along the way – you can’t read them cause you’re going so fast, but still neat. The speed limit across the flats is 75 mph, but I definetely was passed by people doing at least 95. I didn’t realize that the Golden Spike N.P. was 30 miles up from where the freeway split and so I hit traffic all the way up to the park with a lot of road construction and hot, hot weather. Nothing like 6 lanes of stuck traffic to keep you happy! I also didn’t realize that the site was around 20 miles away from my freeway exit. I finally made it up to the Golden Spike NP but they had closed at 5 and I got there about 5:20, so I took a picture and went to a missile manufacturing plant that I passed on the way (ATK, who also makes rockets for NASA). Before I got back on the freeway I stopped to look at the AAA campbook to find a place to stop, and all of the sudden a police officer pulls over to help me find a campsite (what service in Utah!). I found an RV place next to the freeway, grabbed my swimming suit, and hopped in the pool 15 minutes before it closed.
