    Westward Distraction: Day Four

    By Thom | January 15, 2008

8/2: Ashland, MT to East Glacier, MT
Got another wonderful early start and hit one of our major checkpoints, East Glacier, around 3 p.m. It was really smoky from the fires that were nearby so we couldn’t see as far as we would like, you can see it in the pictures. There wasn’t anything to write about between Ashland and East Glacier, lots of ranches, lots of hills, lots of sky, few people, few towns, and no places to update your blog. We camped inside Glacier National Park right at the base of a beautiful mountain lake.

After a dinner we took what was suppose to be a 3.4 mile hike according to the sign, that ended up turning into an 9-miler, to see some falls that were at the end of the trail. I’d have to say that that’s my number one gripe with trail marking signs, I took along the gps for and the sign was way off — we stopped at the 4.5 mile as we came upon a large bull moose in the middle of the trail. I mean coommmeoonnnn we have all of this technology and the dang signs are still wrong… maybe I’ll go into the sign marking business instead. Yeash!

By the time we returned to camp it was getting quite dark and so we did some sitting around and planning our day of “no riding, just seeing” in Glacier NP. We decided that we would take the “Going to the Sun” road over to West Glacier, hangout there and then come back.

That night, I got super sick, from what, I don’t know – maybe the dried apples that I had earlier, but it wasn’t fun and I will spare you the details, but imagine hurling into a fire pit at 2am freezing your buns off :) . My body felt like it was moving whatever was in my intestines back into my stomach as I could feel the smooth muscle contractions. Worst night of my life since I had pink eye in both eyes! (Man, what a baby) I felt better the next morning and for the rest of the trip… must be all the fresh air.
