Westward Distraction: Day Eight
By Thom | January 15, 2008
Yakima, WA to Florance, OR
From Yakima I drove towards Mt. Rainier and, finally, the coast. Most of the time that I was driving I could see the top but I only got one good picture of the top because it started to get very foggy the farther I went up. I stayed at the top in the dilapidated visitors center for about an hour and charged my GPS batteries (that somehow had died). It seemed to me that I never made good time throughout the day, it just kept getting later and later and I was never getting anywhere. I finally made it to Mt St Helen’s but that too was too foggy to see, so I got my stamp took a picture of where I thought it was and moved on. I proceeded down to the coast to a wonderful Oregon state park, probably one of then nicest parks I have ever stayed at. I pulled in about 9 o’clock and was greeted by a super nice guy. I was able to slide into the horse camp section, which meant that I got my own stable and free horse sounds all night, but it was ok with me since it cost a couple bucks less.
Totals for the day:
Miles 261
Avg Speed 42.4
Trip Time: 6:02
Alt 9
Nice sign
The clouds parted to behold:
Same thing, less pretty:
