Westward Distraction: Day Two
By Thom | January 13, 2008
Rapid City, SD to Brodus, MT
We left pretty late in the morning after some pancakes at Stacy’s and meandered through the Black Hills to Wind Cave National Park, where I got a stamp. We headed north towards Devil’s Tower and came upon some beautiful scenery and some cooler weather. We hit the park around 5ish. My father didn’t want to pay for his car to go up and see the Tower, so we unloaded my “tail pack” and we headed two-up. I also bought my National Parks Pass ($200) which allows me to get into parks without paying and I can also camp for cheap at National Forrests. From the Tower we went north towards somewhere in Montana to sleep. The deer were out in full forces as the evening wore on, all that I can say about it is “wow!” I couldn’t believe the amount of them, in MN you sometimes see 4 or 5 deer in a group, where as in Montana you end up seeing like 25 or 30 deer or antelope in a group. I know at one point there were two antelope watching me ride from the other lane and it was only about 7 O’clock in the evening. Due to Montana’s Bambi Effect we decided to stop and sleep in a “campground,” which was more of a grassy patch in the middle of a trailer park… but it was cheap and deer free.
